MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) – Manhattan’s annual Furniture Amnesty Day went on as scheduled Friday, giving residents the chance to donate and pick up used household furniture at no cost.
The event allows Manhattan residents to drop off furniture they would otherwise discard. Attendees were limited to three to five items per family. Volunteers from the community and the Manhattan Fire Department were on hand to help load cars.
How it works
“Furniture’s expensive, we all know that,” said Del’Shae Roberts, a volunteer and manager of student programs at K-State’s Staley School of Leadership. “So if you can find a good couch that is gently used for free, that is really helpful.”
The event originated as a way to reduce illegal dumping of reusable household items such as chairs and dressers.
“The goal is to get everyone who registered today home with something,” Roberts said.
What’s left over
Any furniture remaining from Friday’s event will be available in K-State’s A-2 parking lot through Monday. No volunteers will be present to assist during that time.
“Moving is a huge timely cost, so it’s nice to have events like these that really help give back to the community,” said Victoria Shaw, an event attendee.
