One person is in critical condition after a vehicle crash Saturday afternoon n Manhattan.
The Manhattan Fire Protection District was dispatched about 4:15 p.m. to the 13000 block of Smith Road after receiving a report of a vehicle crash with injuries, according to a news release from the district.
The incident was upgraded to an extrication response based on the information received, bringing additional companies and a medical helicopter to the scene, according to the release.
Within six minutes of the initial call, the first units arrived and found “a single vehicle off the roadway, resting on its roof, with one patient trapped inside,” according to the release.
“Crews stabilized the vehicle and extricated the patient,” according to the release. “A medical helicopter landed at the scene, and the flight crew assisted MFPD personnel with patient care during ground transport to Silver Cross Hospital, where the patient was taken in critical condition.”
The Will County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the cause of the crash, according to the release.
Smith Road is expected to be closed for an extended period, and motorists should avoid the area and seek alternate routes, according to the release.
New Lenox Fire Protection District and the East Joliet Fire Protection District crews assisted at the scene, according to the release.
The Frankfort Fire Protection District and the Monee Fire Protection District provided coverage at Manhattan Station 81 for any additional service calls during that time, according to the release
