1. Arrest made in connection with fatal shooting of 12-year-old in the Bronx, NYPD says
The NYPD has arrested a suspect in the fatal shooting of a 12-year-old boy who was struck by gunfire while riding his bicycle in the Bronx over the weekend.
Police said 45-year-old William Ferrer was taken into custody outside his home Sunday morning in connection with the shooting outside a bodega at the corner of Walton Avenue and Elliott Place in the Mount Eden neighborhood. Ferrer faces multiple charges, including second-degree murder.
Authorities said 12-year-old Jacob Freytes was shot in the shoulder and taken to Lincoln Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
2. Summer Streets returns as DOT considers expansion
For nearly two miles along Vernon Boulevard, stretching from Long Island City into Astoria, runners, walkers and cyclists took over the roadway Saturday as the city’s Summer Streets program returned to Queens.
The annual initiative temporarily closes select streets to vehicle traffic, giving New Yorkers space to exercise, commute and recreate.
Transportation Commissioner Mike Flynn said the city is also exploring ways to expand the program and is seeking public feedback.
3. NYPD: Two dead, man in custody after shooting and fire in Far Rockaway home
Police say a Queens man fatally shot two family members before setting his home on fire and confronting responding officers with a shotgun.
Officers shot and arrested 33-year-old Kegan Thomas after they say he ignored repeated commands to drop the weapon. He remains hospitalized.
Medical examiners still need to determine the exact cause of death for the family members found in the house.
