Several community members gathered at the Queens Museum for a community baby shower organized by Assemblymember Larinda Hooks and Council Member Shanel Thomas-Henry.

New York State Assemblymember Larinda Hooks and New York City Council Member Shanel Thomas-Henry partnered to host a community baby shower for residents of Assembly District 35, which includes the neighborhoods of Corona, LeFrak City, East Elmhurst and Rego Park, on Saturday, July 25, at the Queens Museum in Flushing Meadows Corona Park.

The community baby shower featured free giveaways of child essentials. Items given away included cribs, diapers and more.

“Today is about reminding every parent in this room: you are not alone,” Hooks said. “The best investment we can ever make is in our community, and there is no better investment than making sure every child begins being helped, supported and surrounded by others.”

“[Events like this] are about gathering as a community and looking out for one another, providing resources to one another,” Thomas-Henry said. “These are the community partners that will help guide your journey. So please make sure you pick up every little thing because you never know what you’re going to need.”

Organizations that sponsored this community baby shower included the Queens Museum, the River Fund, Lyft, the East Elmhurst-Corona Civic Association, Community Mediation Services, the New York Immigration Coalition, Urban Health Plan, NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst, the New York Coalition for Transportation Safety, Corona Ambulance Corps, the Hispanic Federation, Public Health Solutions, Dedicated Hands Doula Services, Northwell Long Island Jewish Forest Hills, Comunidad Latinx, MetroPlusHealth, the Apicha Community Health Center, Queens Public Library, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, Pasitos Daycare and the CRECE Family Enrichment Center.
