Mayor Zohran Mamdani responded to criticism that his plan for city-run grocery stores will compete with local bodegas and grocery stores.
The mayor announced that the city-run markets will offer a 30% discount on products, such as vegetables, meat and other kitchen staples in an effort to combat rising costs. The stores will not sell hot food, cigarettes, alcohol or lottery tickets.
Anthony Peña, the president of the National Supermarket Association, a trade association representing supermarket owners in New York and other cities, joined NY1 political anchor Errol Louis on “Inside City Hall” Monday to talk about how his members are reacting to the mayor’s proposal.
The association’s members include stores like Foodtown, Key Food, Fine Fare and C-Town.
