New York City’s iconic newsstands are getting a makeover as some owners look for new ways to use the familiar sidewalk kiosks in a changing media landscape.

In a new article for Curbed, writer Anne Kadet explores how some former newspaper stands are being transformed into cafés, specialty shops and other small businesses.

One example highlighted in the piece is Casa Toscana near Bryant Park, where the owner invested about $150,000 to convert the stand into an Italian café and says sales have grown more than fivefold.

But city regulations still limit what many newsstand operators are allowed to sell, creating challenges for those hoping to reinvent the spaces.

Anne Kadet, a writer for Curbed and author of the Substack newsletter Café Anne, joined “Mornings On 1” to discuss more.
