The Manhattan Fire Department (MFD) responded to a fire at a two-story, eight-unit apartment building at 6:45 p.m. this Monday. The department determined the fire started on the balcony of a second-story apartment.
According to the City’s statement, an MFD fire investigator is working to determine the exact cause of the fire, but they do not suspect foul play.
Assistant Chief of Operations Sam Dameron said that at the time of the alarm, the heat index was at 112.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire within 10 minutes, and remained on scene until after midnight to overhaul the structure and make sure there were no additional dangers.
MFD estimates the loss of contents at $40,000 and the damage to the structure at $100,000.
No people or animals were injured, though three apartment units were deemed uninhabitable overnight.
