One of Queen’s most historic performances is heading back to the big screen. To mark the 40th anniversary of the band’s landmark concert in Budapest, the newly restored ‘Queen Budapest’ will arrive in cinemas and IMAX worldwide beginning October 7 before making its home entertainment debut later in the month.

Meticulously restored in 4K from the original 35 mm film negatives by Sir Peter Jackson’s Park Road Post Production, the film also features newly remixed audio from the original multitrack recordings, delivering the most immersive presentation of the concert ever released. The project marks Sony Music Vision’s first official release with Queen as part of the company’s new partnership with the band’s catalogue.

Captured on July 27, 1986 during ‘The Magic Tour’, the Budapest concert made history as the first stadium rock performance by a Western band behind the Iron Curtain. More than 80,000 fans packed Népstadion, while an estimated 45,000 more gathered outside to hear the show. Fans travelled from across Eastern Europe, including Russia and Poland, to witness the performance, which was filmed by 17 Hungarian cameramen using 17 cameras and 25 miles of film with the approval of the Hungarian government.

The concert would become even more significant in hindsight. Just five performances remained before Queen ended touring forever, with the band’s final concert taking place at Knebworth Park on August 9, 1986. As a result, ‘Queen Budapest’ stands as the last professionally filmed live performance featuring Freddie Mercury.

The film captures Queen at the height of its live powers with performances of “We Will Rock You,” “We Are the Champions,” “A Kind of Magic,” “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” “Under Pressure,” “Who Wants to Live Forever,” “Hammer to Fall” and “Bohemian Rhapsody.” It also includes the band’s memorable acoustic performance of the traditional Hungarian folk song “Tavaszi Szél Vizet Áraszt.”

Following its theatrical run, ‘Queen Budapest’ will be released October 30 as a multi-format collection via Legacy Recordings internationally and Hollywood Records in the U.S. and Canada. Alongside Blu-ray, DVD, CD and digital editions, the newly remixed soundtrack will also receive its first-ever release as a 3-LP vinyl set.
