NEW YORK (PIX11) — A 17-year-old riding an e-bike was killed after crashing into an SUV in Lower Manhattan on Wednesday morning, police said.
The boy was coming off the Brooklyn Bridge bike lane when he collided with a black Chevy Tahoe near Chamber and Centre streets just before 9 a.m., according to the NYPD.

The teen and the 40-year-old SUV driver were both heading northbound on Centre Street when they crashed, and the cyclist lost control, police said.
The boy suffered head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The teen has not been identified.
“My thoughts are with the family of that teenager. The family will have to live with that tragedy hovering over their lives,” Mayor Zohran Mamdani said.
The mayor said his administration has been focusing on infrastructure to ensure all New Yorkers are safe regardless of what mode of transit they use.
Officials said the e-bike was illegal and are calling for the city to stop selling the illegal bikes. Earlier this month, there was a deadly illegal scooter crash on the Queensboro Bridge.
“A high school student shouldn’t be able to purchase an illegal motorcycle. That shouldn’t be controversial. This 17-year-old boy was sold something he should never have been allowed to buy, and now he’s dead. We need New York’s Attorney General and City Council to act now to end the sale of illegal high-speed devices, and save lives,” said Ben Furnas, Executive Director of Transportation Alternatives.
The SUV driver remained at the scene. There have been no arrests.
The NYPD’s Highway Collision Investigation Squad is handling the probe.
