Canadian travellers hoping to visit the Big Apple this summer are in luck: A new initiative aimed at bringing tourists across the border launches next month, helping Canadians save money on hotels, restaurants and attractions in New York City for more than two weeks.
From Aug. 18 to Sept. 7, NYC’s Northern Neighbour Deal will offer discounts to Canadian tourists. At participating hotels, attractions, restaurants, cultural institutions and more, Canadians can save 30 per cent while visiting the biggest city in the United States. Porter Airlines will also offer up to 20 per cent off flights headed to New York City, up until Dec. 15.
“Canada has long been one of New York City’s most important international markets, and we are focused on strengthening that connection by making it easier and more compelling for Canadian travellers to choose NYC,” Julie Coker, president and CEO of NYC Tourism and Conventions, said in a press release on Tuesday.
Canadian travel to the U.S. has slumped
The program comes amid heightened tensions between Canada and the U.S., along with changing travel trends for many Canadians. Statistics Canada released data last week indicating there were 25 per cent fewer visits by Canadians to the U.S. in 2025.
Those changing travel habits resulted in Canadians spending billions less in the U.S. last year. In 2025, travel spending fell by $3.3 billion to $18.8 billion. The data also showed that together, domestic and overseas travel almost entirely offset the decrease in visits to the U.S.
According to the program’s press release, Canada is New York City’s second-largest international market, behind the U.K. In 2026, New York City expects to welcome more than 800,000 visitors from Canada.
Reactions to NYC’s Northern Neighbour Deal online were vastly negative. One person on TikTok said the program sounds like “a fever dream” since President Donald Trump has claimed the U.S. economy is stronger than ever, yet this travel deal come after three Las Vegas tried luring Canadian visitors with dollar-at-par deals.
“USA literally on clearance and we still don’t want it,” one commenter shared.
“Nah, we’re good. Thanks for offering though,” an Instagram user added.
“Change the president and we will all come back,” another noted.
“Canadians can’t afford to travel,” one person admitted.

Discounts aren’t yet available for Canadians, but reservations will open up on Tuesday, Aug. 4. Travellers will be able to save on the following:
40+ hotels including: Ace Hotel Brooklyn, Hotel Indigo NYC Financial District, The Knickerbocker, Renaissance New York Harlem Hotel, Sofitel New York, Walker Hotels and Westin New York at Times Square.
Attractions, museums and tours such as: Barclays Center Arena Tours, City Cruises, Edge, Empire State Building Observation Deck, Intrepid Museum, Mercer Labs, New York Hall of Science, New York Yankees, NY Waterway Harbor Tours, Puttery and Untapped New York tours.
Broadway shows including: Aladdin, The Book of Mormon, Buena Vista Social Club, Chicago, The Great Gatsby, Maybe Happy Ending, Stranger Things: The First Shadow and Titaníque.
Restaurants such as: Ayza Wine & Chocolate Bar, Balade, Rivercrest, The Wolfe and Stout locations by Penn Station, Financial District, Grand Central and Bryant Park.
