The Manhattan Fire Department responded to an apartment building fire Monday, displacing four people and a dog. The fire was reported at 415 Walters Drive around 6:45 p.m. Upon arrival, crews found flames and smoke coming from the second floor and attic of a two-story, eight-unit apartment building.
Six fire apparatus and 22 firefighters responded to the scene. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire within 10 minutes. Yet, crews remained on scene until after midnight, overhauling the structure and making sure there were no additional dangers.
No people or animals were injured in the incidents. MFD reports that all occupants were able to escape the fire safely before crews arrived.
Three apartments were deemed uninhabitable overnight. Four individuals and one dog were displaced and received assistance from the American Red Cross. MFD estimates the total loss of contents at $40,000 and the damage to the structure at $100,000.
MFD reports that the fire began on the balcony of a second-story apartment. An MFD investigator is working to determine the exact cause of the fire; however, no foul play is suspected.
