Amid criticism of its rollout, the city is giving homeowners an extra month to apply for an exemption from a new tax on some second homes owned by non-primary city residents that are valued at $5 million or more.
The deadline to submit an exemption application is now Sept. 18, pushed from the original deadline of Aug. 21.
The extension comes as the Mamdani administration has faced criticism over its rollout, which is supposed to be targeting out-of-towners.
In the last week, the city sent out 17,000 letters to alert property owners that they may be subject to the tax, which is designed to help close a budget gap.
The process drew criticism, as some longtime city residents said they got the letters saying they needed to prove the location was their primary residence.
