State Comptroller Encourages New Yorkers to Search for Unclaimed Funds

New Yorkers are being encouraged to see if they have unclaimed money waiting to be recovered by checking online or attending one of several upcoming outreach events hosted by the State Comptroller’s Office.
State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli said the Office of Unclaimed Funds returns an average of more than $2 million in lost money every day. Since January, the office has returned more than $257 million to rightful owners.
Unclaimed funds can include forgotten utility deposits, trust funds, old bank accounts, uncashed checks, unused gift cards and other financial assets that have been turned over to the state after owners could not be located.
“Everyone loses something, even money,” DiNapoli said. “We’re returning more than $2 million a day to New Yorkers, and my office is working to make it easier than ever to reclaim it.”
To help residents search for and recover lost funds, representatives from the Office of the State Comptroller will attend community events across New York to assist people with the claims process.

The Brockway Truck Show on Aug. 8 at the CNY Living History Center in Cortland.
The New York State Fair, running Aug. 26 through Sept. 7 at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse.
Residents who are unable to attend an event can search for unclaimed funds and file a claim online through the State Comptroller’s Office or by calling 1-800-221-9311.
The Comptroller’s Office also offers an online map showing the amount of unclaimed funds owed to residents by county and region across New York.
