A massive fireball erupted on Wednesday night as firefighters arrived at the scene of a Bronx fire.
Seven firefighters were injured in the explosion. Five of the firefighters had severe burns to their hands and face, said FDNY Chief of Department John Esposito during a press conference on Wednesday.
He added that the burns are considered serious but not life-threatening. The firefighters are awake, alert and speaking, but have serious burns.
When the firefighters arrived on the scene, cars, trash and debris were on fire.
But shortly after, a massive wall of fire surrounded the firefighters, said Dr. Sheldon Teperman from Jacobi Medical Center. He said they are expected to recover and he spoke to each of them.
What they were concerned about is their colleagues and their families,” Teperman said.
The FDNY is investigating what could have caused the fire.
