State Police and local law enforcement agencies will increase patrols across New York this week as part of a statewide crackdown on speeding.
The enforcement campaign begins Monday and continues through Sunday. It is the second high-visibility speeding enforcement effort sponsored by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee this summer.
“Speeding continues to be a leading cause of fatal crashes each year in New York State,” Governor Kathy Hochul said. “I urge everyone to do their part to keep our roadways as safe as possible by following the speed limits, avoiding distractions and never driving while impaired.”
Police conducted the summer’s first “Speed Week” campaign from June 8 through June 14. State and local officers issued 56,578 tickets during that effort, including 14,005 for speeding, 2,220 for distracted driving and 1,386 for impaired driving.
State officials said speeding reduces a driver’s ability to react to unexpected hazards and increases the likelihood of serious or deadly crashes.
New York recorded 34,042 police-reported speed-related crashes in 2024, according to the state’s Traffic Safety Statistical Repository. Those crashes included 315 involving a death and more than 12,000 involving injuries.
Preliminary figures for 2025 show more than 24,000 speed-related crashes statewide. Of those, 231 involved a death and 16,644 involved injuries.
State Police Superintendent Steven James said troopers and their local law enforcement partners will continue working to hold dangerous drivers accountable and encourage safer driving habits.
