NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) — Newly released data from the NYPD indicates there have been 381 shootings and 149 murders through the first seven months of 2026, calling it the “safest year on record.”
Police say major crime fell nearly 13 percent in July compared to the same month last year.

Declines are being reported in every borough, with the Bronx seeing the biggest reduction in crime at 12.5 percent.
Despite overall crime apparently trending downward, transit crime increased, with the number of crimes largely driven by felony assaults and thefts on subways.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch says the overall drop in crime is something to celebrate.
“These incredible public safety achievements are the result of our data-driven precision policing strategy and the tireless work of the members of the NYPD whose long hours and dedication continue to make New York City safer.”
Despite the historic numbers, there are still hundreds of families whose lives have forever been changed by violence.
