STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Tottenville High School offers a flight simulation class as part of its Aviation Flight Technology Career Pathway, a three-year sequence designed to introduce students to careers in aviation and aerospace.

This pathway offers hands-on experience with flight simulators, encompassing engineering practices, innovation in the field, and career opportunities in aviation and unmanned aircraft systems.

The program includes a hands-on element, which enhances the impact of aviation education. Students learn about engineering practices, problem-solving, technological developments in aviation, and various career paths.

“If students can imagine it, we at Tottenville strive to make it happen. We want the students to come to school, to have fun, and to succeed. Sometimes, it just takes a little bit of something different to make that happen,” said Dr. Zach Rosch, the STREAM (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) operations director at Tottenville High School.

The Redbird flight simulator features specific models and capabilities designed to enhance the training experience. About 100 students are currently enrolled in the program. To become an FAA-certified drone pilot, you must pass a 60-question multiple-choice test. This course effectively prepares students for this exam.

Tottenville welcomes visiting intermediate schools for engaging class trips, where students have the opportunity to explore flight simulators. As they immerse themselves in this hands-on experience, they ignite their curiosity and interest in aviation, making the visit both educational and memorable.

Rosch’s passion for planes, transportation, and aviation inspired him to introduce this program to the school. However, Rosch notes that he cannot take full credit for the aviation lab, stating, “It was built on the backs of years of students. The actual design of this space was entirely created and constructed by students.”
