CITYWIDE — THREE BROOKLYN NEIGHBORHOODS are part of a planned expansion of 600 new curbside electric vehicle charger ports, city Department of Transportation Commissioner Mike Flynn announced via press release on Tuesday. Flynn also announced the launch of a new public online portal for New Yorkers to provide feedback on the expansion of the EV charger infrastructure.
Carroll Gardens, neighboring Red Hook and Bedford-Stuyvesant will be the first three Brooklyn locations in the expansion which, as part of NYC DOT’s PlugNYC charging network, will add 600 new curbside charging points to the current 88 Level 2 infrastructure over the next three years across all five boroughs.
The expansion will help support the city’s climate goals by facilitating the transition from fossil fuel-powered vehicles to electric vehicles. NYC DOT selected the neighborhoods based on high residential density, limited off-street parking, and a high concentration of TLC-licensed drivers, with input from TLC drivers themselves. Public engagement, design, and construction will be rolling, and the public can comment on initial proposed sites at NYC DOT’s project portal, via on.nyc.gov/plugnyc-expansion.
NYC DOT aims to provide access to public charging in low- and moderate-income communities, where private charging companies have not heavily invested.
