SYRACUSE, NY — As New York City considers 17 proposals aimed at making e-bikes and e-scooters safer, some people in Syracuse say the conversation is one worth having locally.
The proposals come as e-bikes and e-scooters continue to grow in popularity across New York, offering riders a quick and affordable way to travel. But with that growth has also come concerns about rider behavior and safety.
Will Alexander, who has ridden e-bikes before, said he believes irresponsible riding is more common than many people realize.
“I think a lot of people, when they’re a little intoxicated and they get on these things, it’s kind of a recipe for disaster,” Alexander said. “But, you know, it is also good for cheap public transportation.”
The proposals under consideration in New York City are designed to improve safety for riders and pedestrians. They include new requirements for some commercial riders and restrictions on higher-speed e-bikes.
Although the proposals would only apply in New York City, they have sparked discussion about whether similar safety measures could benefit other communities, including Syracuse.
Andrew Rich, who works downtown, said one of his biggest concerns is sharing the road with e-bikes.
“It’s the fact that they’re on the road where there’s cars, trucks, and I find it difficult when I’m driving,” Rich said. “I don’t want to get into an accident with one of them. That’s my concern.”
Rich said he has ridden an e-bike himself but believes riders should stay aware of their surroundings and avoid putting themselves or drivers at risk.
The proposals in New York City remain under consideration, and it is not yet clear which, if any, will become law. It is also unclear whether local governments in Central New York will pursue similar proposals.
