MORIAH, N.Y. (WCAX) – A former state prison in New York is officially getting boarded up.
We told you back in January about the state’s plans to decommission the shuttered “Moriah Shock” prison this year.
Town officials in Moriah say work started earlier this summer, with construction crews shutting off the lights and water, and boarding up the windows.
Moriah Town Supervisor Matt Brassard said they’re worried the former facility will eventually attract vandals, and they don’t want it to end up like another former state prison, Camp Gabriels, which sits decaying.
“Why waste taxpayers’ dollars when you have facilities and buildings, not just in Moriah Shock but all of the other closed prisons? Why aren’t we using them?” Brassard said.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul included Moriah Shock as one of the three vacant state prisons she’d like to see on a potential constitutional amendment that would allow for development.
Camp Gabriels in Franklin County is also on that list.
The earliest voters could see the amendment on the ballot is 2029.
