NEW YORK − An explosion inside a Bronx apartment building left multiple people injured, New York City fire officials said.
Just before 12:30 p.m. on Aug. 5, FDNY received a call for an explosion inside a five-story building on East 209th Street between Decatur Avenue and Parkside Place, in the Bronx’s Norwood neighborhood, the agency said in an email. Officials said they found flames on the building’s second and third floors. The blaze is currently classified as a five-alarm fire.
At least six people – including one firefighter – required medical attention, according to officials, though the extent and severity of their injuries was not known. However, FDNY did confirm that at least one person was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.
The fire response is ongoing, and it’s unclear what caused the explosion and fire.
NYPD didn’t immediately have information on the incident.
On social media, city emergency management officials said to expect smoke and traffic delays in the area. People nearby should avoid smoke and close their windows.
