The Roundhouse Aquarium, the ocean-minded, free-to-see institution at the western end of Manhattan Beach Pier, always has something rather amazing in the works.
It could be the opportunity to behold King Tides, near the start of summer and winter, from outside the aquarium, or perhaps you’re a fan of the lighthearted plankton races, which have been held inside.
And just about everyone adores the big and brightly lit Christmas tree, a decoration created from bulbs and electricity, that illuminates the top of the octagon-shaped structure around Thanksgiving Week.
Now, as summer winds down, a cool new quartet is capturing fishy fancies at the splashy spot: Giant Pacific seahorses, four juveniles in all, are now on view at the Roundhouse Aquarium.
These are seahorses, still, so, nope, they’re not going to out-measure a flounder or some larger ocean dweller; they’re still on the petite side, all told.
But talk about possessing an eye-catching presence, and sheer prettiness, too: If you’re a seahorse lover, you’ll want to stop by and admire the elegant and frankly awesome Hippocampus ingens from a nearby spot.
“Fun fact: Male seahorses are the ones that carry and give birth to the babies — a rare role in the animal kingdom,” shared the aquarium staff on social media.
That, for sure, should be one of the topics of discussion as you and your family or friends linger before the seahorses’ home corral, er, tank.
After oohing and aahing over these wonders and their incredible, branch-grasping tails, make time to visit the aquarium’s other denizens, including moon jellies, leopard sharks, and oh-so-pink strawberry anemones.
