A veteran NYPD sergeant with 19 years on the force was arrested after she was caught behind the wheel of a 2025 Hyundai Tucson on Staten Island with a blood-alcohol content three times above the legal limit, court documents show.
Julia Griffin, 47, was off-duty when she was pulled over near Susan E. Wagner High School in Manor Heights around 8:45 p.m. Wednesday, according to a criminal complaint.
When tested, Griffin was found to have a blood-alcohol content of 0.241 — well over the legal limit of 0.08, court records show.
A sergeant who observed Griffin during the bust described her as having “a strong odor of alcoholic beverage emanating from her breath, bloodshot
watery eyes and to be unsteady on her feet.”
Griffin was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, driving while intoxicated and driving while ability impaired by the consumption of alcohol, according to the complaint.
According to a police spokesperson, upon her arrest, Griffin was immediately suspended from duty.
The NYPD sergeant is assigned to the Brooklyn Court Section and has served in the department since July 2007, records show.
She has a departmental disciplinary record that includes charges of failed to supervise, violated patrol rules, failed to comply with a lawful order and failed to make required entries in department logs, among others, stemming from incidents in Jan. 2020 and Feb. 2021, according to records.
In both cases, she was punished with 12 months probation, 30 days suspension and the loss of 30 vacation days.
