An upcoming book examines what defines a life, and it’s written by a man who has spent years summarizing the lives of both notable figures and every day New Yorkers.

Sam Roberts has worked as a journalist in the city for more than 50 years, writing several books and working as a correspondent for the New York Times. He has written more than 1,500 obituaries.

Roberts joined “The Rush Hour” to discuss his new book “Are they Dead Yet?”, where he shares what makes an obituary and reflects on his decades-long career.

“Its about people’s lives, what they’ve accomplished, how transformative they are,” Roberts said. “There are no ordinary lives, everyone has a story to tell.”

“Are They Dead Yet?” releases on Aug. 11.
