New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani didn’t appear to get a warm welcome from Staten Island.

On Tuesday, August 4, the politician, 34, visited Midland Beach in the evening and spoke at the borough’s 43rd annual NYPD Patrol Borough Staten Island National Night Out Against Crime event, according to Staten Island Advance.

When Mamdani took the stage, he was met with loud boos and heckling per a clip posted on X. However, the mayor still delivered some brief remarks before exiting.

“It’s a real pleasure to be here, happy National Night Out against crime! Thank you!” Mamdani exclaimed at the end of his short speech before getting off the stage.

According to the NYPD website, the “National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships to help make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live.”

Mamdani has caught heat on both sides of the political aisle for his stance on police.

In July 2025, while campaigning for office, Mamdani told reporters, “I am not defunding the police; I am not running to defund the police,” per Politico. “Over the course of this race, I’ve been very clear about my view of public safety and the critical role that the police have in creating that public safety.”

However, Republicans have still criticized him for his past social media statements bashing the police force before he began his campaign, per FOX News.

In one post from June 2020, Mamdani wrote on X, “We don’t need an investigation to know that the NYPD is racist, anti‑queer & a major threat to public safety. What we need is to #DefundTheNYPD. But your compromise uses budget tricks to keep as many cops as possible on the beat. NO to fake cuts – defund the police.”

Meanwhile, in June, the organization Democratic Socialists of America slammed Mamdani for supporting a plan to increase the police force, The New York Times reported. Additionally, he has kept billionaire Jessica Tisch in her position as police commissioner and typically refers to her for policing.
