The death toll in the devastating Bronx five-alarm fire has reached three casualties as yet another body was pulled from the debris over the weekend.
According to FDNY sources, a third body was recovered from the site of the massive inferno on Saturday afternoon in Norwood. The fire erupted on Wednesday after an explosion rocked the neighborhood on East 209 Street.
FDNY officials said the blaze engulfed the apartment building’s second floor and moved up, causing several collapses. Meanwhile, flames burst from the building’s windows, and smoke billowed into the air. The first death was discovered on Wednesday evening, just after fire officials briefed the media.
“I was in bed and I felt everything shake,” one man who lived nearby told amNewYork on Thursday. “I have lived here for twenty years.”
The residents of the charred building have been left homeless, prompting friends to create fundraisers for the victims, such as Erica Peña, aFamily Enrichment Specialist at PS 195.

In addition to the dead, at least 11 people were injured in the incident. Those who were not at home, like Chris Falcon, raced to rescue his beloved dogs, who he described as service animals.
“Most of my dogs that are in there are service animals. I rescue dogs because I don’t want them to die in a f**king shelter. I’m gonna let them live their last life with me,” Falcon said with tears welling in his eyes.
Falcon was able to reunite with his pooches thanks to aid from the Red Cross.
According to FDNY sources, the cause of the explosion is still under investigation, and as of Sunday, fire marshals are still combing through the rubble.
