NEW YORK – A nighttime boat ride turned to tragedy in New York Harbor late Saturday when a vessel capsized, leaving an infant and a woman dead while 12 others were hospitalized.

What we know:

The vessel overturned just before 10:30 p.m. Saturday near Liberty Island in New York Harbor, with all those on board going into the water.

Police divers rescued a total of 14 people from the water. Twelve individuals were transported to local hospitals with minor injuries. Two others were initially rescued in critical condition but later died from their injuries. 

While their names have not yet been released, police confirmed the deceased are a 27-year-old woman and a 5-month-old baby girl.

The operator of the vessel was arrested by the NYPD for reckless endangerment, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

What we don’t know:

Investigators are determining whether the operation constitutes an illegal charter operation, while investigating the circumstances and cause of the deadly capsizing.
