TULSA, Okla. — A local organization is working to make sure black mothers to – be have the resources they need.
Queen’s Village has been around for a few years, but this is the first time they’ve ever done a week of activities. Omare Jimmerson, the Executive Director of Oklahoma Birth Equity Initiative says they hope this helps build community between the women.
“From this particular QV week, we hope people make connections not just with us as an organization, but also with each other that will be long lasting beyond this week,” said Jimmerson.
Oklahoma Birth Equity Initiative started Queen’s Village as a way to bring black mothers together and get resources into the community.
Jimmerson explains, black women have higher chances of having maternal health issues, and this is one of their ways to combat that.
“We believe that by creating safe spaces where black women can be themselves and step away from the stressors of this world we reduce those different deficiencies we see within our system,” said Jimmerson.
Wednesday was a maternity photoshoot and Thursday was a mommy and me stroll through Greenwood. Saturday they will host a summit to educate mothers and give them resources.
Sunday is a community baby shower.
“We think building community amongst women especially women who are marginalized is a great way to build a support system so mom has a support system for her and baby,” said Jimmerson.
You can register for these events online, but they say even if you don’t register they want you to show up. They hold queen’s village events all year so there are more opportunities if you want to get involved.
