A 17-year-old boy died after first responders pulled him and another teen from the water in a frantic rescue effort at Rockaway Beach in Queens, officials said Tuesday.
The victim was pulled from the water near Beach 83rd St. by FDNY personnel about 7:35 p.m. Sunday while an 18-year-old man was rescued by a lifeguard, according to the NYPD.
“My office is devastated to learn that a young man lost his life,” City Councilwoman Joann Ariola, who represents the area, posted on social media on Monday. “Despite the heroic actions of first responders — actions which saved the life of another individual with him in the water — a young man lost his life.”
Medics rushed both victims to St. John’s Hospital, where the survivor was in stable condition, an NYPD spokesperson said.
The younger teen was transported to the hospital in critical condition and later died. His name was not immediately released.
At New York City public beaches, lifeguards are on duty from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the summer. Swimming is otherwise prohibited.
