Aug 11 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he was assessing whether the federal government could mount a legal challenge to avert a progressive surcharge on luxury second homes in New York City.
Trump called New York’s new “pied-a-terre” tax “dangerous political experiment” in a social media post.
The new tax – named after a French term for a secondary residence that translates as “foot on the ground” – was passed into law as part of the New York state budget in May.
“I am looking to see if the Federal Government has any legal right to avert this disaster,” Trump said.
The tax has already been challenged in state court and a Staten Island judge on Monday temporarily blocked its rollout, according to U.S. media.
