The NYPD has seized more than 3,000 guns off the Big Apple’s streets, the city’s top cop celebrated on Tuesday.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said on Aug. 11 that New York’s Finest had removed 3,259 illegal firearms since January; almost 200 of the weapons were considered ghost guns, either produced through untraceable 3D-printing technology or had their serial numbers removed.

Tisch said the gun crackdown was largely the result of great cooperation between NYPD officials and a slew of state and federal agencies — a partnership forged through weekly meetings between representatives of the police and the agencies that have taken place for more than half a decade. 

“The NYPD has taken more than 3,000 guns off New York City streets so far this year, contributing to the fewest murders, shooting incidents, and shooting victims in recorded history,” Tisch said. “This milestone is a direct result of our precision-policing strategy: putting officers where and when they are needed most, identifying the drivers of violence, and taking guns off our streets. I thank the brave NYPD officers who execute this work and our law enforcement partners, including the Gun Violence Strategies Partnership, who help us build strong cases, hold criminals accountable, and keep our city safe.”

Of the 3,259 illegal guns seized this year, 915 were taken in Brooklyn, 782 found in the Bronx, 764 seized in Manhattan, 605 recovered in Queens, and 193 taken on Staten Island.

Tisch shared that this milestone came on the 5th anniversary of the Gun Violence Strategies Partnership (GVSP), a weekly meeting held at 250 Vesey St. between more than 30 federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies. During this meeting, officials mull over the latest gun arrests to zero in on the most harm-causing trigger-pullers.

“NYPD detectives look and see who’s been arrested in the last 24 hours for a gun-violent felony, shooting someone, robbing someone with a gun, illegal possession with a gun. They get the list of those people who meet that in the last 24 hours. Then they see if they are on parole, or they’re on probation, or they’re previously convicted of a gun-violent felony, or they’re out on a gun-violent felony from another county,” said Chauncey Parker, executive director of New York/New Jersey High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area. “They’re laser-focused on the very, very small number of people who are shooting people and hurting people in New York City, and that’s what this team does.”

Four of the five boroughs’ District Attorneys, Attorney General Letitia James, and U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York Joseph Nocella Jr. also joined the announcement that comes amid what police say is an historic low in shootings.

According to NYPD data, there were 381 shooting incidents as of Aug. 1st, compared to 412 during the same period in 2025. A total of 462 people were hurt in gunfire incidents compared to 489 shooting victims in 2025.

“Recently, the NYPD and federal agents developed information on a crew associated with the Blounts gang that was trafficking guns in Far Rockaway, Queens. Even worse, the gang was selling guns out of apartments occupied by children. In recordings, you could hear the children’s little voices in the background, while deals for deadly weapons were going on in the middle of the day. We were able, thanks to the strategic partnerships, to build a solid case against five defendants. So solid that this last month, the last of the five defendants pleaded guilty to trafficking 40 firearms.” Nocella, Jr said. “What those guns could have done in the hands of criminals is frightening.”
