ALBANY, N.Y. — New York State Police focused on commercial vehicle safety as part of the “Check Your Height, Know It’s Right” campaign along the New York State Thruway.
The campaign took place at the end of July with a goal to reduce bridge and overpass strikes.
The initiative included 348 commercial vehicle inspections by Troop T’s Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit. Of those, 126 vehicles were immediately taken out of service for safety-related violations.
State Police issued a total of 966 violations, including five for over-height vehicles.
Troopers also handed out 189 uniform traffic tickets for speeding, lack of seatbelt or restraints, cellphone use, registration and license issues and other violations.
NYSP stated that over the last five years, more than 375 bridge strikes have been recorded on the Thruway system.
The maximum legal vehicle height on the Thruway is 13 feet 6 inches. Vehicles taller than this require a permit.
