BENNINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – A Bennington man charged with attempted murder after a July shooting and crash is now jailed in New York awaiting extradition.
The Bennington Police say Griford Saupin, 49, was one of four passengers in a car on July 25. They say a fight broke out and Saupin shot the driver while they were headed north on Park Street, causing the car to crash into three parked vehicles.
The driver, a 38-year-old man, was airlifted to Albany Medical Center in critical condition. Saupin and two other passengers were also treated at the hospital in New York. Police say a fourth passenger walked away from the crash and is being sought.
Saupin is now in custody in New York. He faces charges including attempted murder, possession of a firearm by a person convicted of a violent crime, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Police say the male victim is listed in stable but critical condition.
