HUDSON VALLEY- Congressman Pat Ryan called Andrew Cuomo a “selfish POS” when he endorsed Zohran Mamdani for New York City Mayor two months ago.
Ryan spared Cuomo any barbs when he congratulated Mamdani, a controversial Democratic Socialist, on his win over the former governor on Tuesday night. Mamdani, 34, is expected to become one of the most liberal mayors in Gotham in decades.
“I’m always rooting for NYC and will work with anyone and everyone to deliver for New Yorkers,” said Ryan (D-NY-18). “Congratulations to Mr. Mamdani on a hard-fought win and for his laser focus on lowering the cost of housing, food, and childcare — now it’s time to get to the hard work of delivering!”
Many high-ranking Democrats vowed to support Mamdani and defend him against any retaliation from President Donald Trump. The Commander-in-Chief has called Mamdani “a communist” and threatened to withhold federal funding from the city if he were elected. Meanwhile, Republicans continued to rip Mamdani as a radical leftist after his convincing win over Cuomo.
“Democrats have officially handed New York City over to a self-proclaimed Communist, and hardworking families will be the ones paying the price,” said Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Joe Gruters. “Zohran Mamdani’s radical agenda will push businesses out, drain taxpayers dry, and drive one of America’s greatest cities into lawlessness. His election is proof that the Democrat Party has abandoned common sense and tied itself to extremism.”
Congressman Mike Lawler (R, NY-17), a frequent critic of Mamdani, rifted on X about the Mayor-elect.
“Freezing rents. Banning private property. Seizing the means of production. Defunding police. Shutting down prisons. Legalizing prostitution. And hiking taxes by $9 BILLION — in the financial capital of the world. Good luck selling that in the suburbs next year,” Lawler wrote.
Democratic New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand urged President Trump “to focus on the constituents we all serve and prioritize making their lives better, not his personal political vendettas.”
“New York voters have fairly and freely chosen their next mayor, and the results of this election should not draw the ire of the president or the federal government,” Gillibrand added. “I stand ready to defend New York against any and all of the retaliation from the Trump administration.”
