Middle school girl scout, Olive takes center stage in inspiring a new documentary: “Cookie Queens”

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — For generations, Girl Scout Cookie season has been a beloved American tradition, teaching young girls valuable lessons in leadership, teamwork, and entrepreneurship. The new documentary Cookie Queens takes viewers behind the cookie booth to reveal the determination, friendships, and personal growth that come with the experience. Directed by Alysa Nahmias, the film follows a group of ambitious middle school Girl Scouts, including standout seller Olive, as they navigate the highs and lows of one of the most competitive cookie seasons in the country.

At the heart of Cookie Queens is Olive, the top cookie seller in her high-achieving troop of middle school girls. While many students balance sports, clubs, and social events, Olive has made Girl Scouting her top priority. Her dedication to the organization and its values is evident throughout the film as she works tirelessly to achieve her goals during cookie season.

“I really love Girl Scouts because it teaches me how to be confident and work with people,” Olive says in the film. “Selling cookies is about more than just numbers. It’s about learning skills that will help me later in life. Plus, I’m able to share with my troop the proceeds that help fund events like a trip to Europe.”

The documentary captures more than just sales totals. It explores the friendships and personal connections that form through the Girl Scout experience. Viewers see Olive spending time with her friends and fellow troop members who shares her enthusiasm for scouting. Whether they are preparing for cookie booths or attending etiquette classes together, the girls support one another while facing the pressures of meeting ambitious goals.

Director Alysa Nahmias presents the story through the girls’ eyes, creating a vibrant and observational portrait that highlights both the emotional and intellectual stakes of their experiences. The film celebrates their accomplishments while honestly showcasing the challenges and expectations that come with competition.

“There can be a lot of pressure, but I try to remember to have fun and help my troop,” Olive shares. “One thing I didn’t know was how much I enjoyed getting to know the camera crew and the people making the film.  It felt like family.”

The result is an engaging coming-of-age story that reveals the joys, tensions, and life lessons woven into the annual Girl Scout Cookie tradition.
