Several donation drives are being held across Queens to benefit those impacted by the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that Colombia on Monday, Aug. 10.

A 7.4 magnitude earthquake hit Colombia on Monday, Aug. 10, at roughly 7:34 a.m., leaving over 250 people dead, according to Reuters, and over 900 injured. The first major earthquake in years, the country has declared a state of emergency.

The earthquake has hit cities in the Coffee Axis of Colombia, including Pereira, Cali, Quibdo, Manizales and Armenia. The epicenter of the earthquake was located in Choco province, and the most deaths recorded were in Cali, with over 85 dead. Due to the quake, several airports have suspended operations, 18 hospitals have been affected, with 3 of them collapsing, and 39 schools were affected, according to a national briefing made by Colombian President Abelardo De La Espirella.

From afar, residents in Queens – where over 146,000 Colombians reside – across various neighborhoods have come together to host reliefs and drives to collect funds and items to send to the families affected by the quakes. These places are only accepting new and unopened items, and will be accepting items from now until Saturday, Aug. 22.

Products to donate include hygiene products (soaps, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant, feminine hygiene products and body wipes), baby supplies (diapers, baby wipes, diaper-rash cream, sealed formula, sealed baby food), first-aid supplies (first-aid kits, bandages, gauze, medical tape, antiseptic wipes, disposable gloves), emergency supplies (flashlights, new batteries, portable power banks, N95 masks, work gloves, emergency blankets, whistles) and cleaning supplies (heavy-duty garbage bags, cleaning gloves, disinfectant wipes, sponges, paper towels, small cleaning supplies).
