by The maintenance is high but this estate-condition two-bedroom has charming original 1920s features, an interesting history, and “oblique river views,” as the listing puts it. In the Brooklyn Heights Historic District, it’s on the fourth floor of 2 Grace Court, a six-story, 121-unit building that overlooks New York Harbor on a storied cul-de-sac close to the Promenade.
The storied part is that this street played an outsize role in Heights history. Once part of the Remsen estate, in the 19th century it was home to the Packer and Prentice families and their mansions, whose fortune was built on hatmaking and who influenced the development of the Heights and the city of Brooklyn.
The Packer mansion was torn down in 1916, and this brick building with limestone details designed by Mortimer Freehof opened in 1924.
With high ceilings and wood floors, the six-room apartment includes an entrance foyer, dining room, and one bathroom. Coved ceilings, picture rails, and original moldings run throughout most of the unit.
