Syracuse Citizens Review Board Chairman Donald Johnson says the board will resume investigating complaints against police starting on Monday.
Johnson made that announcement during a meeting on Wednesday.
The board stopped investigating complaints in April following a court decision against the Rochester Police Accountability Board, largely stripping that group of its power.
During Wednesday’s meeting, Johnson said that only the common council can suspend its duties.
He said an opinion issued by the corporate council earlier this year is legal advice to the city and does not relieve the board of its duties.
Johnson also said that members can decide to stay on or turn in their resignation.
“And finally, when I had enough people say verbally, ‘I want to continue with the investigations,’ then that’s when I, as the chairman of the board, and with those people in agreement, that’s how we came up with this,” Johnson said.
Both the mayor’s office and Syracuse Police Department did not immediately return requests for comment.
