In early June, the state legislature passed what’s known as the One Fair Price Act in an effort to ban surveillance pricing — which is when companies use consumers’ personal data to set individualized prices.

Gov. Kathy Hochul hasn’t yet signed the bill into law. A coalition of industry and trade organizations hopes she will make changes to the bill before implementation.

In a letter to the governor, the groups called on Hochul to implement changes including language that distinguishes “dynamic pricing” from “surveillance pricing” and an exemption for discount and loyalty programs.

Julie Samuels, the president and CEO of Tech:NYC, a group that represents the policy interests of the technology industry in the city, joined NY1’s Bobby Cuza on “Inside City Hall” Wednesday to discuss more.

She is also one of the letter’s signatories.
