New York City will soon begin issuing fines to homeowners who don’t use the required NYC trash bins. Warnings are being issued this summer, with penalties starting September 8. Homeowners have been required to use the bins since June 1, but no fines have been issued yet. The Department of Sanitation says warnings will continue through Labor Day. After that, fines will start at $50, increase to $100 for a second violation, and reach $200 for additional violations. Properties with one to nine residential units must use an official NYC Bin. The bins come in 45-, 35-, and 25-gallon sizes and are available at Home Depot stores across New York City or online at HomeDepot.com/NYCBins. The NYC Bin was introduced in July 2024.
