WASHINGTON (TNND) — The New York Police Department will not be providing security to Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s wife when she goes on vacation to the Middle East.
Rama Duwaji, Mamdani’s wife, is set to go to Lebanon and Syria to visit family there in September, according to a report from the New York Post.
Mamdani’s spokesperson reportedly said that the first lady’s security detail should go with her.
However, the NYPD told Fox News that police officers would not be going with her.
“The NYPD does not send officers to countries with level 4 travel advisories for discretionary reasons such as personal travel,” a spokesperson for the law enforcement agency told the news outlet.
An NYPD detectives’ association slammed the implication that police detectives should accompany Mamdani’s wife on vacation.
“Our detectives put themselves in harm’s way every day protecting New Yorkers,” Detectives’ Endowment Association President Scott Munro said. “The DEA would never remain silent if our members were asked to travel to a dangerous, off-limits foreign country for anything other than a legitimate law-enforcement or intelligence operation.”
He said that detectives needed to stay in the city.
