“Start spreading the news,” Mayor Zohran Mamdani whisper sang Thursday while announcing a new lottery program to help high school students see Broadway shows for free.
The lottery program will distribute 2,000 free tickets to seven different shows, as part of a partnership between the City and the Theatre Development Fund. Tickets will be available for the following shows:
Buena Vista Social Club
In the Heights (New York City Center)
School Girls Or, The African Mean Girls Play
Stranger Things: The First Shadow
The Lost Boys
The Great Gatsby
Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York).
“In a city overflowing with extraordinary art and culture, every young person should have the opportunity to experience those moments, regardless of what’s in their bank account,” Mamdani said.
The lottery is open through August 17, with winning students gifted up to two tickets for select Broadway shows. Students can access the lottery at on.nyc.gov/Broadway.
All students who enter the lottery will automatically get a free, two-month TDF membership, gifting them access to “deeply discounted” tickets to Broadway, Off-Broadway and Off-Off Broadway shows.
“This is justice for the theater kids who have watched City Hall roll out lotteries for major sporting events all summer long,” the mayor joked.
