Everyone needs a break sometimes. Mayor Zohran Mamdani takes his siesta next week.
He won’t be going far, though — just in case.
Mamdani let the cat out of the bag at an unrelated press conference Wednesday, when he was asked about Monday’s upcoming court challenge to his pied-a-terre tax.
He won’t be in New York City.
Mamdani kept it vague, despite a follow-up question, saying only he’s going “upstate.” He declined to give additional location information, as did City Hall.
City Hall says he’ll leave Sunday and return the following Sunday, Aug. 23, after spending time with his family. A spokesman didn’t specify who would be there.
The week away will mark a visible absence in New York City. Mamdani has anywhere from one to four public events a weekday, by rough estimate.
A statement said the mayor will still receive regular updates from senior staff. First Deputy Mayor Dean Fuleihan will lead day-to-day operations until Mamdani gets back.
On Thursday, a reporter asked him if it was just coincidence that he was going away the same week his pied-a-terre tax faces a legal challenge in court. The mayor gave that one a good laugh.
