After over a decade, the fight for Elizabeth Street Garden is now over.
The developers who were set to start construction in the space filed a lawsuit against the city, but announced on Thursday that they are dropping it.
In exchange, Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the developers can build new housing on a vacant lot at 22 Suffolk St. instead.
It will include more than 180 affordable homes, including affordable housing for seniors.
A statement on behalf of the development team said: “Haven Green was never solely about housing or solely about preserving open space. The goal was to prove that New York City could achieve both.”
“With the City moving forward with the development of 22 Suffolk Street and the garden transitioning to public stewardship, that objective has been realized,” the statement continued.
The battle over the space that houses Elizabeth Street Garden started in 2013.
It was set to be converted from a green space to an affordable housing complex.
Previously, the Adams administration killed the Haven Green housing project to save the garden shortly before leaving office.
