WEST HARTFORD, Conn. (WFSB) – A man from Queens has been extradited to Connecticut after he allegedly defrauded an elderly West Hartford resident of nearly $600,000.
Vishavjit Singh, 26, was taken into custody on Thursday, Aug. 13, by West Hartford detectives and Connecticut Division of Criminal Justice inspectors at the Sussex Correctional Institute in Georgetown, Delaware.
According to police, the scam began in March 2025 when the victim received a fraudulent error message on her laptop claiming the device had been hacked. Shortly after, she received a phone call from a woman claiming to be from Apple Support, who repeated the hacking claim and told the victim she was under investigation for criminal activity.
When the victim was skeptical, the scammers spoofed the West Hartford Police Department’s non-emergency phone number to call her back. An individual impersonating a West Hartford police officer spoke with the victim to convince her the claims were legitimate.
Over several months, the scammers maintained contact with the victim. On multiple occasions, they instructed her to put large amounts of cash in boxes and wait for courier vehicles to pick them up.
Following a lengthy, multi-agency investigation involving the West Hartford Police Department, the U.S. Secret Service, the Hartford Police/FBI Financial Crimes Taskforce, and the NYPD, investigators identified Singh as a suspect.
Singh faces charges of first-degree larceny and interfering with an officer. He was being held on a court-set $200,000 bond ahead of his scheduled arraignment at Hartford Superior Court on Friday.
