The New York Giants fell to the Minnesota Vikings, 13-10, in their preseason opener Saturday at MetLife Stadium, marking John Harbaugh’s coaching debut with the franchise.
Quarterback Jaxson Dart led a second-quarter drive and delivered a precise 15-yard touchdown pass to rookie wide receiver Malachi Fields for Fields’ first career score. Kicker Ben Sauls then drilled a 46-yard field goal as time expired, giving the Giants a 10-3 halftime lead.
The Vikings answered in the third quarter with a 54-yard field goal and a one-yard touchdown pass from Carson Wentz to Myles Price, capitalizing on Giants penalties near the goal line. New York managed no further points as backup Brandon Allen threw two interceptions in the fourth quarter.
Odell Beckham Jr. received a standing ovation upon his return and recorded his first catches with the Giants since 2018.
Several key starters sat out, including Malik Nabers, as Harbaugh evaluated depth in his first game on the sideline.

Running back Dante Miller has returned to the field after limping off earlier in the fourth quarter.
On a punt midway through the fourth quarter, running back Dante Miller got banged up and limped off the field with trainers.
It’s been a rough go for quarterback Brandon Allen since taking over for Jameis Winston. Despite leading the NFL in preseason passing yards over the past decade, Allen has struggled with his TD:INT ratio, and Saturday’s performance will not help.
On a third-and-6, Allen forced a pass into double coverage (Ryan Miller), and it was intercepted by Jacob Thomas.
Following a third-down pass interference penalty on cornerback Korie Black, the Giants defensed stuffed two inside goal-line runs and forced a Vikings timeout. Unfortunately, they couldn’t stop the flow as cornerback Art Green committed his own pass interference, resetting the downs.
On their third unearned opportunity, quarterback Carson Wentz hit wide receiver Myles Price for an over-the-shoulder one-yard score, assuming the lead.
Vikings 13, Giants 10
On his first attempt after replacing quarterback Jameis Winston, veteran Brandon Allen targeted Odell Beckham Jr. over the middle but failed to see a defender in the lane. Linebacker Jacob Roberts made the easy pick.
After the Giants went four-and-out to open the second half, the Vikings marched down the field and capped off an eight-play, 57-yard drive with a 54-yard field goal by Will Reichard.
Cornerback Korie Black stopped Minnesota’s drive with a key third-down pass defensed.
Halftime: Giants 10, Vikings 3
The Giants ended the first half by capping off a six-play, 17-yard drive with a 46-yard field goal off the leg of Ben Sauls, who is competing with rookie Dominic Zvada for the starting job.
The drive saw Beckham Jr. make his first catch for the Giants since 2018 and get wide open on several other routes.
And just like that, Odell Beckham Jr. enters the game to a standing ovation and sustained applause.
The Giants have pulled their offensive starters and inserted the second team, but wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. is not among them. Braxton Berrios, Malachi Fields and Calvin Austin are in the game.
After missing a few plays, quarterback Jaxson Dart returned to the field and was promptly flushed out of the pocket, but he avoided defenders and unleashed a perfect pass to rookie wide receiver Malachi Fields for his first career touchdown.

The touchdown capped off a 10-play, 63-yard drive.

The first quarter has come to a close with the Vikings leading the Giants 3-0.
The Giants offense has been largely sluggish and made several mistakes. Perhaps none worse than Tyrone Tracy Jr. missing his block, leading to a crushing sack of Jaxson Dart.
The Giants looked sluggish on their first offensive possession, which ended with a sack of quarterback Jaxson Dart, who had his first read taken away. No play went for more than five yards.
It looks like Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores game-planned a bit, which is uncommon for preseason games.
The Vikings put the game’s first points on the board with a 35-yard Will Reichard field goal, capping off a 10-play, 54-yard drive.

Harbaugh loses first challenge
Head coach John Harbaugh challenged a third-down completion to Jordan Addison, but the call was upheld. First down Vikings.
The Vikings have won the opening coin toss and will receive. The Giants will have the ball to start the second half.

Player arrivals Starters expected to play
ESPN’s Jordan Raanan reports that the Giants are expected to play quarterback Jaxson Dart and most of their starters against the Vikings.
“The expectation is that quarterback Jaxson Dart and most of the Giants’ starters will play against the Vikings, according to multiple sources,” Raanan said. “That makes sense considering Harbaugh said earlier this week that he values game experience in the preseason, and Dart doesn’t have a lot of game experience.”
How many snaps they take remains to be seen.
The Giants have ruled out wide receivers Malik Nabers (knee) and Jalin Hyatt (leg/ankle). Cornerback Paulson Adebo (hamstring) is a game-time decision.
