Queens of the Stone Age have confirmed the title of their new album, Perfecth, and have revealed a possible release date.
The announcement comes by way of a new 90-second video clip featuring band members Josh Homme and guitarist-keyboardist Dean Fertita playing a game of five-finger fillet, a dangerous game in which you place your hand on a table and rapidly stab a knife back and forth between the gaps in your fingers.
Fertita gets through the game unscathed, and Homme asks to have a try, but before he can begin, Fertita asks when the new record is coming out.
“Um, September 30th, I think?” Homme replies, before trying to give it a go; Fertita interrupts again, asking, “You excited?”
Homme smiles awkwardly and admits, “Uh, you’re kind of freaking me out… Yeah, yeah I’m excited. It’s going to be good.”
From there, it all goes wrong for Homme, who sees the knife plunged through his right hand. As blood covers both musicians, Homme admits that perhaps he won’t be around to see the album come out, after all.
Instead, a perky voiceover rounds off the clip by sharing, “Queens of the Stone Age, the new album, Perfecth, coming September 30th.” However, the end of the clip sees the date crossed out to account for Homme’s less-than-desirable condition, and instead the promise that the album will be “Coming… soon?”
The band’s preoccupation with blood and gore seems to be a theme of the new album, as the music video to their preppy new single, ‘Easy Street’, also centres around a bloody affair.
In the video, a bashed-up Josh Homme is chased through a village by a mob of angry misfits until the crew assemble for a chaotic house party with a gruelling twist.
Perfecth will follow on from the band’s eighth studio album, 2023’s In Times New Roman. Far Out gave the release a three-star review, observing, “Queens of the Stone Age are as sharp musically as they’ve ever been, but the material just doesn’t quite rise to the same level that the band are at.”
