One of the more popular outdoor gear and apparel stores in the United States has announced it will be shutting the doors on a few locations and one of them is in New York State.
According to reports, and a press release from REI, the stores are set to close in 2026.
The USA Today noted that, “The Seattle-based co-operative, with more than 25 million members and over 190 stores, announced that it would close stores in Boston, New York City and Paramus, New Jersey, in 2026”.
Here in the Buffalo and Western New York area, a new location has recently opened! The store on Niagara Falls Boulevard hosted a grand opening recently and it was packed with shoppers!
What Is REI?
For those who love the outdoors and hiking and camping, REI is a great place to shop and get advice from various experts and other Co-Op members. According to their website, REI “We are Recreational Equipment Inc., a consumer co-operative that exists to inspire and equip everyone to get outside”. I had never been in one of their stores before we did a radio station appearance at the newest store in Amherst, NY. The store is well stocked with outdoor apparel that is a little more high end than other outlets.
REI has stated that they will continue to serve customers in the other regions outside of the stores that are set to close in the new year. There are currently 7 REI stores in New York State.
