Princess Eugenie’s third child is named Adelaide, with middle names honouring the late Queen and the family’s adopted home in Portugal.

Princess Eugenie has shared the name of her third child, two weeks after welcoming her daughter with husband Jack Brooksbank. In an Instagram post, Eugenie revealed the baby is called Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank, adding that she’d been named after three people the couple loves and admires, including her great-grandmother, whom they hold close to their hearts, a clear nod to the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Eugenie also tied the name to the family’s life in Portugal, where she and Brooksbank have been based with their two sons since 2022, noting that the name carries both English and Portuguese history, the two places they call home. Adelaide was born in Lisbon, making her the first of the couple’s three children to be born outside the UK.

A name with several layers of family history

Eugenie’s post included new photos of Adelaide alongside her older brothers, five-year-old August Philip Hawke and three-year-old Ernest George Ronnie, both of whose own names carried similar tributes when they were born, August to Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s husband, and Ernest partly in memory of Prince Philip.

According to royal reporter Rebecca English, Adelaide’s first name draws partly from Maria Adelaide, a Portuguese figure regarded as an honorary saint, tying directly into the family’s adopted home. The name Adelaide also has an older royal precedent, tracing back to Queen Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen in the 19th century, a great-aunt of Queen Victoria. The middle name Elizabeth needs little explanation, a direct tribute to the late Queen, while the final middle name, Annina, is a less obvious one, a rare Italian nickname derived from Anna or Anne, loosely translating to “little Anne.”

Part of a wider pattern among the Queen’s great-grandchildren

Adelaide joins a small but growing list of the late Queen’s great-grandchildren named in tribute to her, most notably Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s daughter Lilibet, named directly after the Queen’s own childhood nickname. Princess Beatrice, Eugenie’s sister, made a similar choice with her daughter Sienna Elizabeth in 2021.

For Eugenie, the choice fits a pattern she and Brooksbank have followed with all three of their children, using middle names as a thread connecting each child to family members past and present, rather than treating the names as one-off tributes.
