Starting Tuesday, online retailers must stop selling illegal electric bikes and scooters or face a steep fine.
The city’s law forbids the sale or operation of e-bikes that go faster than 25 miles per hour and e-scooters that exceed 20 miles per hour.
Earlier in August, Mayor Zohran Mamdani issued cease and desist letters to 42 retailers selling unauthorized vehicles and warned companies they could be fined as much as two-thousand dollars per sale if they fail to comply with city law.
Meanwhile, in a little over a month, the City Council is expected to consider 17 bills to curb illegal e-bike use across the five boroughs.
This all comes after a series of deadly crashes over the past year.
Ligia Guallpa, the executive director of the Workers Justice Project, joined NY1 political anchor Errol Louis on “Inside City Hall” Tuesday to discuss more.
The project is the parent organization of Los Deliveristas Unidos, which represents the city’s estimated 65,000 app-based food delivery workers.
